JOIN US AT HOPI NATION APRIL 25-26TH 2020 -- COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER PLANTING AND SUPERADOBE WORKSHOP! -- NEW DATES SEPT 12-13, 2020

One Light Global has partnered with sovereign elders and children of Shungopavi (Soöngopavi) village of the Hopi Nation, in a project to preserve traditional wisdom and regenerative practices, restore food security and support cultural, ecological and economic revitalization.

The Natwanhooyam project aims to bring the vision of the children and elders to life and includes the building of new infrastructure through the teaching of traditional building methods, dryland farming, seed saving, herbal medicine and plant wisdom, language preservation and cultural arts, as well as incorporating cottage industry, entrepreneurship, new regenerative and innovative design, permaculture practices and environmental stewardship.

Over the past year and a half, and through the help of donors like you, we put up a large frame house and made possible regular classes in traditional cultural arts, by providing materials and supporting teachers. Now Spring and Planting season have arrived and through your generous holiday donations we are ready to construct the next buildings, plant the fields and add to the agricultural land site.

We are honored to invite you to join us on April 25th & 26th 2020 to volunteer at the project site you have been supporting. It is a chance to get your hands in the dirt to plant and build alongside Hopi elders and children. To learn sustainable building techniques and new regenerative technologies, laugh, sing, and get creative together.

Bring the family! Kids are welcome but please understand this is an off grid construction site so they must be supervised by a parent at all times. All volunteers will be required to sign liability release waivers.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

To date, due to generosity of our donors, we have funded the placement of a multi-purpose building, rainwater collection set up through transportation of tanks and installation of guttering, construction of 5 looms and materials for Hopi belt weaving classes, art classes, beading, pottery, herbal, cultural heritage/ history, and Hopi language. Our relationships have grown, and plans are being seeded for the coming year!

A reliable van or bus to transport the children from the village to the fields and agricultural site is still required and we are seeking community grants and funding for the ongoing project success.

Our next steps include both continuation and expansion of Hopi Culture classes and teaching, agricultural land practices, growing traditional and additional organic and heirloom food crops for the community, sponsorship opportunities for both children and elders to attend workshops and events, the further expansion and  building of eco and traditional buildings for the childrens’ village, incorporating livestock and animal husbandry, adobe bread ovens, corn pits , rocket stoves, entrepreneurship, art trails and local events, addressing solar, wind and other power generation options, further water collection systems, tree planting and restoration of bee colonies and local plant life and biodiversity, and more!

Projects such as these strengthen cultural values and acknowledge the importance of reverent traditions, community and respect for all life. The children of Soongopavi have expressed their wishes for a brighter future and to retain their culture and so we send a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the many wonderful people who have assisted with this project and contributed to it's success by donation, prayer, sharing and on- ground presence.

JOIN US IN SEPTEMBER!

THANK YOU WITH ALL OUR HEARTS!!!!!
