Hopi Nation and Indigenous Peoples' Day

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to honor First Nations across the world. After an inspiring and wildly successful build at Hopi Nation, the elders have shared their vision for a classroom for traditional arts and place to do ceremonial dance for the children.
Many now see how necessary indigenous wisdom is for the healing of our planet, and how important it is to honor the wisdom and rightful place in our human community of first peoples. If you would like to honor and support the Hopi today and into next year, 100% of your donation will contribute to building this classroom and dance area to preserve traditional educational opportunities for the children of Soöngopavi Village and the continued creation of a sustainable community space there.

CLASSES TAUGHT BY HOPI ELDERS & INSTRUCTORS
The arts and Hopi tradition are inseparable. The class room will enable a central space for teaching and learning including traditional weaving, beading, painting, carving, traditional medicine, herbalism, Hopi history and Hopi language. The Hopi language frames the way in which the Hopi talk about their universe and so retention and fluency of the language is of great importance. Hopi lavayi (language) is rooted in the Hopi culture as a people. The language defines who Hopi are spiritually and is integral in really understanding the full meaning of Hopi ceremonies. The depth of Hopi language cannot be expressed in English.. the language is unique to Hopi worldview and as the Hopi hold great responsibility as stewards of Earth it is not just about just not a language, it is a teaching tool of life. Hopi language is so metaphorical, it actually enables the speaker to think at a higher level.

TRANSPORTATION

A second-hand van or mini-bus is required to transport the children safely to the agricultural fields and classes from the village. Currently, they have to walk over an hour to the land, which poses a safety issue and means the smaller children aren't always able to join in.
If you would like to make a tax deductible donation of a vehicle for this purpose or have any leads please contact us!

BUILDING MATERIALS
To expand and develop the children's space and ag land area, we need traditional stone, superadobe materials, solar lights, roofing, and other supplies for the classes.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

In collaboration with Hopi traditional regenerative agricultural practices, we are developing sustainable practices with our partners at Hopi Nation.

The site of the seed storage dome, greenhouse, dryland farming, chicken coop and so much more that your donations made possible will be planned again in the Spring for the restoration of food sovereignty and cultural revitalization.
We hope you will come join us for another volunteer weekend in April.
